WHAT WE DO

Our Starting Point - The Breeding Program

BC Guide Dog Services maintains an in-house breeding program. The role of the breeding program is to provide a regular supply of suitable puppies for our training programs.

Early Education - The Puppy Raising Program

All puppies bred by BC Guide Dog Services are placed in our supervised volunteer puppy raising program.  Click to read about being a Puppy Raiser.

Professional Canine Education - The Training Program

At approximately 15 months the dogs enter the Training Program working with a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. This advanced training is completed in approximately 16 - 18 weeks depending on each dog’s individual needs.

Client Training - Classes

Client training classes last three weeks. Classes are run Monday through Friday. We run two types of classes, domiciliary training (at home training) and residential training from a hotel. Residential courses are based at a local hotel for eleven consecutive days. At this point clients return home for the weekend and rest.  During the third week of class, the client receives one week’s domiciliary training.

Post Graduation - Life Long Aftercare Services

BC Guide Dog Services provides life long aftercare services to our clients. This is done through three programs. First, post-class aftercare is provided 3 months after graduation. Second, annual aftercare takes place with each client. Third, priority aftercare is provided as requested by our clients.
